Students at Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino recently witnessed an inspiring display of skill and determination as six teenagers with Duchenne muscular dystrophy faced off against the school’s faculty and staff in a power wheelchair soccer game. The match took place as part of the school’s celebrations for Catholic Schools Week. Led by Crespi senior Alex Llauro, the LA Soccer Club team emerged as the champions with an impressive 8-0 victory.
In power soccer, players compete on a basketball court and must navigate the game using power wheelchairs. The LA Soccer Club team, affiliated with the United States Power Soccer Association, showcased their expertise in the sport. Llauro, who has played in the wing position since 2018, scored two goals and contributed three assists during the match.
The game attracted a large audience, with fellow students cheering on their classmates. Many of them had never witnessed power wheelchair soccer before, which is a rapidly growing international sport with over 250 teams participating globally. A short power soccer video was screened before the match to familiarize the audience with the rules and dynamics of the game.
The Llauro family has been instrumental in raising awareness about Duchenne muscular dystrophy. They established the nonprofit Walking Strong Foundation, which provides support to individuals and families affected by the condition, as well as funding for scientific research at UCLA.
